What is Green AI?
Green AI refers to artificial intelligence designed and operated to minimize environmental impact. It encompasses energy-efficient algorithms, sustainable data center infrastructure, renewable energy use, and lifecycle considerations for AI hardware. The Green AI Institute promotes research, standards, and practices that make AI both intelligent and sustainable.
How much energy does AI use?
AI training and inference consume significant electricity. Training large language models can use energy equivalent to hundreds of homes for a year. Data centers powering AI account for roughly 1–2% of global electricity, a share expected to grow. The Green AI Index and our white papers provide detailed methodology for measuring AI energy use.
Can AI be sustainable?
Yes. AI can be made more sustainable through: (1) energy-efficient hardware and algorithms, (2) data centers powered by renewable energy, (3) liquid cooling and efficient cooling systems, (4) longer hardware lifecycles and circular economy practices, and (5) AI applications that enable climate solutions. What is the environmental impact of ChatGPT and other large language models?
Large language models require substantial energy for training and inference. Training can generate hundreds of thousands of pounds of CO2. Ongoing inference adds to the footprint. How do data centers reduce carbon emissions?
Data centers reduce emissions by: (1) procuring renewable energy via PPAs and RECs, (2) improving PUE through efficient cooling and design, (3) using liquid cooling for high-density AI workloads, (4) siting near renewable sources, (5) waste heat recovery, and (6) participating in grid flexibility programs. What is PUE and why does it matter?
PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) is the ratio of total facility energy to IT energy. A PUE of 1.5 means 50% of power goes to non-IT overhead (cooling, lighting, etc.). Lower PUE means less wasted energy. Leading facilities achieve 1.1–1.2. Many regulations now mandate PUE targets. See our glossary and case studies.
What regulations apply to Green AI and data centers?
Regulations vary by region. The EU AI Act includes environmental protection; the EU Energy Efficiency Directive requires data center reporting.
